Landscape Architecture Graduate Admissions

A portfolio is required for application to the Graduate School of Landscape Architecture.

Course placement is based on skills demonstrated in portfolio and/or transcript evaluation.

  1. Application: Submit an online application
  2. Statement of Intent: One-page essay describing your goal for graduate studies and how it is supported by your personal and professional experiences (700-word limit). Please see instructions below. Upload PDF to SlideRoom.
  3. Transcripts: Transcript(s), official or unofficial, issued by the institution(s) where you earned college level course credits. If you attended more than one institution, please include transcripts from all institutions. We need to see the breadth of your General Education. Academy of Art University accepts electronic submission of official and unofficial transcripts. Please send transcripts to transcripts@academyart.edu. Transcripts, once received, will be uploaded to SlideRoom by Academy of Art. (Note: international transcripts must be evaluated by an approved credential evaluation agency – please contact your admissions representative for a list)
  4. Resume: Please describe your educational background, work experience, and skill sets. List all software skills. Upload PDF to SlideRoom.
  5. Portfolio: Placement is based on skills evidenced in portfolio. Please see instructions below. Upload PDF to SlideRoom.
  6. Letter of Recommendation: Letter of support attesting your interest, aptitude, work ethic in an academic or professional setting. Upload PDF to SlideRoom.
Statement of Intent

Describe your goals, purpose, and intentions for earning a graduate degree. If you are applying from an unrelated field, explain how your prior experiences can be leveraged for studying Landscape Architecture. Please do not submit AI-generated text. We would like to hear your authentic voice.

Portfolio Format

Please do not use AI to create your portfolio. An accurate assessment of skills helps with course placement that ensures your academic success.

  • The portfolio should visually document your creative endeavors and support your intent to study Landscape Architecture. For applicants with a design background, the portfolio will be evaluated for content as well as for clarity in visual communication. Applicants without a design background should use images and text in a logical way to explain the content.
  • Create a multi-page PDF file (20-page limit). Please note that maximum file size for SlideRoom is 10MB for each PDF file — you can upload multiple PDF files if needed. Please be sure to compress or optimize file size before uploading.
  • Include detailed descriptions of each project. For each project, please provide title, location, date, and course number or company name. If applicable, please list all software tools used in each project.
  • List your name on the cover page as well as on each page of the portfolio. 
  • For collaborative work (or projects done in professional context) please describe in detail your contribution and list skills utilized to complete the tasks.
  • All material, written and graphic, must be original work created by you. Any referenced work must be properly cited.
Portfolio Content

An awareness of the environment, spatial thinking, visual communication, evidence of creativity, basic design are some of the skills we would like to see in your portfolio. If your previous education and experience are unrelated to Landscape Architecture, please include examples representative of your skills.

The following are suggestions for the portfolio. Please include if applicable.

  • Site Plans with accompanying section/elevations and/or sections
  • Site observation and analysis
  • Freehand sketching /drawing
  • Hand drawn and rendered perspectives
  • Understanding of construction documents and techniques
  • Handmade models
  • Computer assisted drawings: plans, sections, elevations, GIS, etc. List all software used.
  • Drawings that clearly describe design process
  • Studio art
  • Travel sketches
