
LAN 607 Historical Precedents of Landscape Architecture
Human history is recorded in the landscape. You’ll explore the factors that have converged at various points in time to create the iconic landscape spaces and traditions that continue to influence the profession today.
Course Learning Outcomes
- Identify the major historical developments of human designed landscapes, their prevailing characteristics and the forces that shaped them.
- Recognize the evolution of the human relationship to nature and how that relationship is reflected in gardens and other designed landscapes.
- Identify prominent individuals and their respective contributions to the development of civilization and the understanding of our relationship to the natural world.
- Evaluate the use of historical precedent throughout history as well as in contemporary landscapes.
- Recognize that distinct styles and eras of design are a product of identifiable cultural, climatic, technological processes, among others, and are not arbitrary.
