Landscape architects need to know their plants. Identifying the origin and growth requirements of a variety of trees, shrubs, ground covers, vines, and grasses will help you make responsible and appropriate design decisions.

Course Learning Outcomes

 

  • Describe the various spatial, aesthetic and functional roles plants have played throughout history
  • Recognize and describe the various types of plants, plant communities, plant parts and their defining characteristics
  • Identify the qualitative characteristics of plant form, texture, color and their uses in defining space
  • Describe natural and urban environmental factors and their various effects on plant growth and health
  • Identify close to 50 plant species typically found in urban environments
