
LA 319 History of the Built Environment 3: 1900 to Present
Explore the evolutions of art, architecture, and urban and landscape design conditioned by the Industrial Revolution and two World Wars, focusing on a comparative and contextualized analysis of the most relevant spaces of the 1900s.
Prerequisite: LA 116 or LA 108 or LA 107 or AHS 116
Course Learning Outcomes
- Articulate the history and theories of architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism, framed by diverse social, economic, national and political forces (NAAB PC4)
- Expand on the social, political, and aesthetic transformations that affected the world as a consequence of the world wars
- Compare built environments across the globe in terms of design strategies, socio-political conditions, and material technologies
- Discuss continuities and divisions between architecture and landscape projects within the history of twentieth century design, including socio-political movements and climate crises
- Explain and evaluate the role of precedents in the design of buildings, landscapes, and urban environments from 1900 to the present
- Contextualize contemporary and past built environments in relation to students’ own creative milieu
