ARH 602 Graduate Design Technology 1: Structures

Faculty: Carl Wilford

Course Description

Gain an understanding of how structural systems and materials impact architectural form and structural design. You will study the elements, connections, and organizations used in the construction process from elemental to complex structures in different materials.

Course Learning Outcome

As a result of successfully completing this course, students…

  • Will be able to:

    • Understand and discuss the basic concept of structural engineering and how it overlaps with architecture.
    • Analyze and discuss different types of loads in a building, types of construction, and types of structural components in a building.
    • Come up with rough sizes of various types of beams, slabs, and columns.
    • Recognize main lateral structural systems, vertical and horizontal trusses, wind loading, and foundations with the respect to active fault lines and soil, retaining walls and typical thickness of walls.
