School of Architecture Fall Lecture Series Present Stephanie Davidson and Georg Rafailidis of Davidson Rafailidis

Stephanie Davidson received her Master of Architecture degree from Dalhousie University in Canada, after studying at the Architectural Association in London and competing undergraduate degrees in both architecture and fine arts. Stephanie practices together with Georg Rafailidis as Davidson Rafailidis. Since 2010. Alongside practice, Stephanie has taught architecture in Germany and in the United States since 2007.

Georg Rafailidis is a registered architect with the architect chamber Berlin, Germany. He received his architectural diploma from the University of Applied Sciences in Munich, Germany and a Master of Arts from the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, England.

Rafailidis was assistant professor at the RWTH University in Aachen Germany from 2005 until 2010 before becoming professor at the University of Buffalo, NY. He worked for Herzog & de Meuron in Basel and London before setting up the independent practice, Davidson Rafailidis, with his partner Stephanie Davidson in 2008.

The practice offers heightened physical relationships between buildings and users. It pursues an architecture which triggers free appropriation by users, not by being generic, but by being specific, full and generous. The practice received international funding from the Landesregierung Nordrhein-Westfalen Germany, Edmonton Public Art Canada, the Canada Council for the Arts, and many others.

Realized projects and competitions by Davidson Rafailidis have received awards and recognition through publications in magazines such as art – Das Kunstmagazin, DETAIL, Interieurs, AZURE, C3, Inventario, ARCHITECT, ARCH+, Canadian Interiors, Transmaterial, De Architect, db deutsche bauzeitung, among others

International awards include the Arch+ Competition 1.prize and a Van Alen Institute Honorable Mention. Projects were exhibited in venues such as Contractworld Germany, eme3 Spain, and the EKWC Netherlands, among many others.

Davidson and Rafailidis recently authored a book, published by Routledge, called “Processes of Creating Space: An Architectural Design Workbook.” The book proposes a methodology for architectural design which is geared toward the production of “experiential typologies” rather than program-based spaces or buildings.
