Please check in with your studio faculty each week through synchronous Zoom meetings (OR view recordings). This can be as short as 20 minutes though you are encouraged to stay for the entire session!

All-Section Zoom Sessions – Every Wednesday (5-6pm Pacific Time), instructors from multiple sections jointly offer a Zoom session to explain the new assignment for the week, answer questions, share tutorials and work examples.  We also sometimes break into smaller groups so you can chat informally with classmates.

Small Group Zoom Sessions – In addition to the All-Section Zoom Sessions, each instructor offers additional meeting times rest of the week to provide individualized feedback on work-in-progress in a small group setting.  Students who have not yet started the assignment are highly encouraged to attend to see other students’ work which will serve as visual examples. Taking interest in each other’s progress is an important way to build Studio Culture. Times range from weekdays, evenings, to weekends.

Please look for Zoom links posted by your faculty in the Brightspace classroom on the first day of class! While it is ideal to join your instructors’ sessions, it is also possible to join other section’s office hours if you have schedule conflicts. All sections work on the same assignments and our faculty team is very collaborative. Zoom recording links will also be posted in Brightspace. If none of the published times work for you, requests to set up alternate times for 1:1 sessions are happily accepted!

There is no grade penalty for not attending live sessions and you can view Zoom recordings in case of schedule conflicts. However, anecdotal data over the past 15 years, since we began offering online studio classes, shows that there is a strong correlation between student success and Zoom sessions. We have noticed that 100% of the students who don’t regularly meet with faculty struggle to achieve course expectations and fail ARH 110 Studio 1.

Students find these weekly check-in’s incredibly valuable and helpful:

• There is clear evidence that attending weekly office hours correlates to students’ engagement, improvement, and success in achieving course learning outcomes.
• Meeting with other students and instructors, and sharing questions and advice reduces the isolation that online students often feel.  You do not have to have work completed in order to attend – simply listening is welcome, and is a helpful and easy way to learn.
• Live dialogue about your design work (and/or other students’ work) is the fastest and most efficient means to communicate.  Instructors can give you more specific tips and notes more quickly, and can answer your questions immediately.  Often, these sessions provide you with a clearer work path and process for the rest of the week.  Our instructors don’t bite, so don’t be shy!
• Talking about design may be new to you; practicing your verbal communication is an important skill to acquire, as architects need to communicate their design and ideas clearly and convincingly to all stakeholders (clients, contractors, consultants, etc.).
• Plus, it’s fun to make new friends that share your interest in architecture and can cheer you on!

Each semester, we create a Discord group specifically for ARH 110 OL students (https://discord.com/).  This is an informal virtual group chat for students to connect to each other outside of class times.  Students share memes, questions, inspirations, projects, interesting videos or guides, geeking out on all things architecture!  Students have sometimes self-organized late-night video-conference work/study sessions together.  As an informal community site, faculty will also post department-event announcements and additional resources on Discord. Our student chapter of NOMA (https://www.noma.net/), which includes our graduate architecture, landscape and interior design department students, also runs a Discord chat – all are welcome!  You can meet and get advice from upper classmen in our program!  Join up!
