Bio:
Simon McKenzie, AIA, is a Canadian architect and educator, currently working at Feldman Architecture. For the last seven years, he worked at SOM’s international office in San Francisco, contributing to projects at a variety of scales and types. After spending many years designing skyscrapers, airports, mixed-use developments, and other large projects, he is currently focused on single family homes and disaster relief shelters. Before his time at SOM, Simon gained experience at acclaimed offices such as OMA in New York, Coop Himmelb(l)au in Vienna, and the Research and Development Laboratory of 3XN in Copenhagen. Simon has an additional three years of architectural experience working in Canadian offices, including one he founded in 2014.
Simon gained his Bachelor of Architecture Studies from the University of Waterloo and Master of Architecture at McGill University. At McGill, his architecture thesis delved into the connection between mind, body, and the built environment, exploring topics of phenomenology and neuroscience. For six years, he also taught at the Academy of Art University, while maintaining his fulltime position as a practicing architect. He is currently teaching three classes, between the undergrad and graduate level program. In both teaching and practice, he believes great design emerges out of a rigorous approach that utilizes the best tools at your disposal, whether that be physical model making or the use of generative AI and advanced digital software.
